Richard Dreyfuss and Harry Turtledove
In this tale of alternate history, the American Revolutionary War never occurred, and the North American Union is still part of the British Empire. While many would consider this tale to be an alternative history speculative fiction book, I found myself seeing it as more of a fantasy.
Don't get me wrong -- it's a very good book, and I found it quite enjoyable (if a bit slow to get started). It's just that the book -- which takes place in 1999 -- makes some far-reaching implications about how a British rule of North America would affect society and technological progress. I found it difficult to believe these assumptions, which made the book less "real" -- and that makes it less of an alternative history. In terms of plot, it's essentially a Victorian mystery anyway.
