Alfred Bester and Roger Zelazny

Alfred Bester is an acquired taste, but in this, his last novel (finished posthumously by Roger Zelazny), I think he shows his most accessable effort. Arguably, The Demolished Man is a better work, but those seeking to begin reading Bester's works would do well to begin with this tome.

How did I come to acquire this taste? The name "Alfred Bester" may be ringing a bell for some people; it will sound very familiar to fans of the television series Babylon 5. In that show, Alfred Bester is a Psi-Cop, a telepathic member of a totalitarian police force. J. Michael Straczynski, who created Babylon 5, named the character in homage to the author. As a fan of the show, and of Mr. Straczynski's writing, I wanted to learn more about his influences.

The influences are there; any fan of Babylon 5 will see familiar elements that Mr. Straczynski has adopted or adapted to fit his needs. For these fans, Bester's work is especially thrilling.
